MOBILISM

2012-2014

This street photography project contains – as the subtitle of the #mobilism photo book also says –  photographs of me, you and everyone we know. The project is about the role of the mobile phone in our society today and our longing for communication and context, but not necessarily with the people right next to us.

The photo book #mobilism contains nearly 400 pictures was released in September 2015 by Bœcker Books

SLEEPING WITH

THE LIGHTS ON

2005-2012

I left my home town Gustavsberg in the mid eighties. The old hub of the industrial community, the porcelain factory, had by then lost most of its importance to the area. When I moved back twenty years later in 2005 new winds were blowing and Gustavsberg is now one of the fastest growing communities in Sweden.

The Gustavsberg of my ancestors, who came here in the 19th century, was not the place for those who were scared of the dark. Today you can barely see the stars on the night sky due to the lights from the factory, the supermarket parking lot and the headlights from the cars passing down the highway.

Gustavsberg is a community that is subject to constant change, and these photographs are therefore quickly becoming history. So even if the exposure time is between five and twenty minutes, all photographs can in a way be considered as snapshots.

Sleeping with the Lights On is also the title of my first photo book, published by Kehrer Verlag in 2013.

FORECAST

2009-2010

First, the Mediterranean closes. Then – 25 million to 75 million years from now – Australia moves north, slamming into Indonesia and Malaysia before pirouetting counterclockwise to smash into the Philippines and then Asia, even-tually merging with it. Antarctica also moves north, shedding its

icecap. Roughly 100 million years from now, it plows into the Indian Ocean, and 50 million years later wedges itself between Madagascar and Indonesia. The Indian Ocean becomes a virtual inland sea. Meanwhile the biggest tectonic change of all – driven by a giant subduction zone – has torn through the dark Atlantic and begun to eat up seabed, slowly closing the ocean. Some 200 million years from now, the

closure forces Newfoundland to smash into Africa and, a bit later, Brazil to ram into South Africa. The collisions gain force; 250 mil-lion years from now, the continents will have merged into a new supercontinent that encircles what remains of the Indian Ocean.

William J. Broad – The New York Times, January 2007

All pictures are double exposures on negative black-and-white film. First the entire roll of film was shot in one city – Los Angeles, Berlin, Mexico City, Stockholm, Bangkok, Budapest etc. Then the film was rewound and the entire roll was exposed once again in another city.

DER MENSCH

IN DER MASCHINE

2009- (Work in progress)

This series is about the iconic, modernist, place Slussen in Stockholm and the nearly one million people passing through its machinery everyday. The concrete and iron construction from 1935 is in bad shape and will be torn down to make way for a new, much debated, construction.

The idea of this project is to photograph the feeling of being there surrounded by the noise, smell, rust and the crumbling concrete, more than to document exactly what the place looks like.

The total raw picture material from Slussen can be seen as a source from which I occasionally pick up pictures for various exhibitions and publications. I also continuously add new material.

ELECTRIC CITY

2009

I think wireless electricity is reasonably close. No further breakthroughs are required, the researchers say, just continued engineering work to find the optimum design of the coils and the electrical control systems.

André Kurs – MIT news, April 2010

The presence of technology can, more than many other things in a photograph, give you an idea of when it was made. Objects such as cars with fins, oversized mobile phones, a cassette Walkman or a bulky TV-set can help date the photograph, at times even

indicating the precise year it was taken. This series of photographs show technology that is rapidly becoming obsolete. As even electricity eventually becomes wireless, these graphic signatures will disappear from the city skylines, thereby dating the photographs to the early 21st century.

SLAKTHUSOMRÅDET

2012

Slakthusområdet, the meat packing district of Stockholm, was inaugurated by HRH King Gustav V in 1912. It has for a century served as a food factory for the capital of Sweden. Discussions are ongoing about moving operations from the valuable land adjacent to the Globe and the newly built TELE2 arenas to make way for housing, an IKEA store, parking lots etc.

I visited Slakthusområdet with my camera during the sleepy summer months of its 100th anniversary year to catch the unintentional architecture which will soon be history. The buildings have over the years been subject to many changes and extensions in response to new demands on

function and changing needs. This has led to visually interesting solutions that almost never are aesthetic but merely practical.

A book with the pictures in this series will be released on Trema Förlag.
